Other questions or issues about online submission?

1. Formatting/special symbols and characters

How do I add bold, underline, or italics to my submission?

Internet Explorer users: Use the Formatting Buttons.

Netscape or MAC users: To add special formatting to your text, you must type a special code before and after the text you want to format. For example, to add bold formatting to a word or phrase in your document, you would enter the following information:

[bold] word or phrase [/bold]
The special codes are as follows:
Bold: Insert [bold] before the text and [/bold] after the text.
Italic: Insert [italic] before the text and [/italic] after the text.
Underline: Insert [underline] before the text and [/underline] after the text.

How do I enter superscript and subscript characters?
Subscript: Insert [sub] before the text and [/sub] after the text which you want subscripted.
Superscript: Insert [sup] before the text and [/sup] after the text which you want superscripted.

How do I add symbols and Greek characters?
To add a Greek or symbol character, click the character you wish to insert on the Character Map. The program will automatically insert at the end of the current text a special code for that character in the text box.

What should I do if the Greek character, special symbol, or multinational/accented character that I want to use is not included in the list of supported characters and symbols?
E-mail to Technical Support or send a fax to 507-334-0014 and explain which character or symbol you want to use. If at all possible, that character or symbol will be added to the list of supported characters and symbols for use by all authors.

2. Tables and figures

Can I include tabular information in my submission?
Yes. To create a table, click on Add/Edit table (limited to 8 columns). Greek characters and symbols are supported using the special bracket codes. You can also use the special bracket codes to add bold, italic, underline, superscript and subscript.

When I try to paste a simple table into the body of the document it looks okay where I insert it, but when I go to the preview it doesn't look right. How can I get it to hold?
The submission program does not allow tables to be pasted directly into the body of the submission. To ensure that we receive the table in the proper format you need to enter any tabular information into the table function built into the program. Simply click on add/edit table and enter the data into the cells provided.

Can I include a figure in my document?
If you wish to include a figure(s) with your submission, you can use the submission program's figure function to reserve space for your figure or you may upload your figure directly.

If you need to re-upload a figure, you will need to rename the file before uploading for a second time.

3. "Spell checking" and importing text

Can I "spell check" my submission?
No. The online submission program does not have a spell check function. However, you can copy the text and paste it into your computer's word processing program and perform the spell check in that program. We strongly encourage you to use the "Spell Check" and "Grammar Check" functions.

Can I import text from another document?
Yes. You can copy text from another document and paste it into the online text boxes. Remember that you must enter codes for any Greek characters or special symbols.

4. Submission length

How long can my submission be?
There is an automatic feature incorporated into the program which checks the size of your submission each time you save (it will report the amount of space used as a percentage). The program will not allow you to submit if the submission is too long.

Note: The character count does include spaces.

5. Viewing and printing your submission

Can I view the information I've entered and see how it will appear in the submission?

Can I print a draft of my submission?
Yes. You can print a copy of all information entered and saved by going to the Preview screen and selecting "Print" from your browser's file menu.

Will the published version of the submission look exactly like the final printout?

6. Other submission questions

I have completed my submission. Where is the submit button?

Along the left side of the Internet page, click on the "Submit " link, if you are finished editing. You will need to complete the electronic signature on the Submit Page. If you have submitted successfully you will be directed to a "Thank You " screen.

When I leave the authors (or any other) data entry screen and then come back it appears to have lost all of my changes. Is my data lost and how can I get it back?
Your data is probably not lost if you hit the save key. What is happening is your computer or server is caching pages, or displaying the page as it remembers it when first opened. If you hit the reload/refresh button you will force the computer to go out and get a fresh copy of the page, which should have your changes reflected on it.
