1. Formatting/special symbols and characters
-
How do I add bold, underline, italics, superscript and subscript characters? top
Use the Formatting Buttons.
-
How do I add symbols and Greek characters? top
To add a Greek or symbol character, click the character you wish to insert on the Character Map. The program will
automatically insert at the end of the current text a special code for that character in the text box.
2. Tables and figures
-
Can I include tabular information in my abstract? top
Yes. To create a table, click on Add/Edit table (limited to 8 columns). Greek characters
and symbols are supported using the special bracket codes. You can also use the special bracket codes to add bold,
italic, underline, superscript and subscript. The "Preview Abstract" screen will show boxes around each table
entry. The boxes will be removed prior to publication and the table will appear in a standard table format.
-
When I try to paste a simple table into the body of the abstract it looks okay where I insert it, but when I
go to the preview it doesn't look right. How can I get it to hold?
top
The submission program does not allow tables to be pasted directly into the body of the abstract. To ensure that we
receive the table in the proper format you need to enter any tabular information into the table function built into
the program. Simply click on add/edit table and enter the data into the cells provided.
3. "Spell checking" and importing text
-
Can I "spell check" my abstract? top
No. The online submission program does not have a spell check function. However, you can copy the text and paste it
into your computer's word processing program and perform the spell check in that program. We strongly encourage you to
use the "Spell Check" and "Grammar Check" functions.
-
Can I import text from another document? top
Yes. You can copy text from another document and paste it into the online text boxes. Remember that you must enter codes
for any Greek characters or special symbols.
4. Abstract length
- How long can my abstract be? top
There is an automatic feature incorporated into the program which checks the size of your abstract each time you save
(it will report the amount of space used as a percentage). The program will not allow you to submit if the abstract is
too long. Note: The size calculation does
include spaces.
5. Viewing and printing your abstract
-
Can I view the information I've entered and see how it will appear in the abstract? top
Yes. Any information that has been entered and saved may be viewed by clicking
Preview Abstract.
-
Can I print a draft of my abstract? top
Yes. You can print a copy of all information entered and saved by going to the Preview Abstract screen and selecting
"Print" from your browser's file menu.
-
Why does my abstract print out on more than one page? top
If you have an image within your abstract and it has large dimensions, it will push the abstract onto a second page.
-
Will the published version of the abstract look exactly like the final printout? top
No. The published version will be reformatted. You will not be able to adjust the margins or have much control over the
appearance in the electronic version that you submit, but adjustments will be made for publication. The text will
probably be justified.
6. Other submission questions
-
Where can I find the institution reference numbers? top
If you scroll down to the bottom of the Author/Institution page you will see the area where you can enter the
institution information for your abstract. Once that is entered, take the corresponding institution number (listed to
the left of each entry) and put it in the institution reference space of the author that belongs to that institution.
-
I have completed my abstract. Where is the submit button? top
Along the left side of the Internet page click on the "Submit Abstract" button. Click OK if you are finished
editing. You will need to click the red box in the top center of your screen stating "Yes, I am finished making
changes. Submit my abstract now". If you have submitted successfully you will be directed to a "Thank you for
submitting" screen.
-
When I leave the authors (or any other) data entry screen and then come back it appears to have lost all of my
changes. Is my data lost and how can I get it back? top
Your data is probably not lost if you hit the save key. What is happening is your computer or server is caching pages,
or displaying the page as it remembers it when first opened. If you hit the reload/refresh button you will force the
computer to go out and get a fresh copy of the page, which should have your changes reflected on it.
